We have positions open for students with work-study support. The expectation for work is 12 – 15 hours per week. Work-study salaries vary from $13.25/hr to $15.00/hr depending on experience.
The Natural History Museum is a research institution across the street from USC. We are looking for students of all majors to work with us in Invertebrate Research & Collections.
A background in biology or research is not required. We are looking for responsible, adaptable, can-do individuals who are looking for a unique employment opportunity. You will be involved in specimen sorting, specimen handling/preparation, cataloging, lab maintenance, and research assistance.
These positions have the following responsibilities (including, but not limited to):
- Maintaining the cleanliness, organization, and needs of the lab.
- Following lab and collection management procedures correctly.
- Sorting marine invertebrates into their proper taxonomic orders.
- Interacting with the public in a friendly, informative manner.
- Assisting with retrieving supplies, potentially lifting up to 40 lbs.
- Potentially conducting independent research or assisting in existing research occurring on site.
These positions have the following requirements (including, but not limited to):
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination.
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks.
- Must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to follow instructions.
- Confident communication skills; must be able to communicate to the public in a friendly, coherent manner.
- Must be capable of working with preserved biological specimens.
