Moss Landing Invasive Species Study 2003–2008
Section Responsible for Processing
MBC
Significance
The California Department of Fish & Game is required by state law to conduct investigations to assess the presence of non-native aquatic species. From 2004 to 2007 they funded several large scale biodiversity surveys along the outer coast (2004 & 2007), San Francisco Bay (2005), and bays & harbors (2006). Stations along the outer coast were selected for access to both sandy & rocky intertidal & subtidal areas while the other two surveys focused on subtidal fouling on hard substrates & adjacent subtidal benthic habitat. Data resulting from the studies has been incorporated into the USFWS’s California Aquatic Non-native Organism Database (CANOD), NOAA/USGS’s Pacific Coast Ecosystem Information System (PCEIS), and SERC’s National Exotic Marine Estuarine Species Information System (NEMESIS).
Background
The work was overseen by the MPSL headed by Rusty Fairey at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. Taxonomists involved with the projects are listed in the attached PDF. Each taxonomist was required to provide 2 voucher lots of each taxon they identified from the outer coast surveys and 2 vouchers of each taxon from the bays and harbors/San Francisco bay surveys for a total of 4 vouchers. These were then divided into two sets. One set was given to CDFG and the other was to be retained by MPSL. All phyla are to be deposited at LACM.
Collection Location and Dates
Vouchers are currently in 0.5-2.0 dram vials and 1-2 oz jars. MBC is providing the labels, MLML is associating specimens with the labels. Specimens are expected to arrive at LACM February 2010 and be ready to be put into taxon jars and shelved.
Taxonomic Contents
The collection consists of approximately:
Lots
263 Polychaetes & Oligochaetes
103 Crustacea
27 Bryozoa
14 Cnidaria
9 Ophiuroidea
130 Mollusca
29 Platyhelminthes & Nemertea
45 Porifera
60 Urochordata
Some species only occurred once during the surveys. These vouchers would have put into the CDFG set so the number of lots coming to NHMLAC may be somewhat lower than the totals listed above.
