Significance (Top)

For more than a decade mostly large coral heads were housed at the North Grand Warehouse. 22 February 2011 Museum Marine Invertebrate Collections staff relocated these to the South Grand Facility. This is not a single collection, but rather at least 4, 5 or more collections: Samoa, Tahiti, Phillipines, Farnsworth Bank, Eckhardt, CalTech, and possibly more.

Pago Pago Samoa, collected November 1937 to May 1935: According to the "Transfer and de Accession Sheet" dated 17 February 1978, there were originally 20 standard museum crates of large coral pieces and 70 museum crates of smaller pieces of coral, some natural, some painted. 22 February 2011 there were about 10-20 crates. We did not observe any painted pieces. Specimens appear to have been field dried as some infauna remains attached.

Tahiti: an accession note associated with some specimens, appears to have come from a private donation, but it is unclear which specimens this accession card is associated with.

Some specimens are clearly from the Phillipines, 1966 Manilla Times newspaper hint at origin.

Some lots are clearly from Farnsworth Bank, off Catalina Island - maybe collected for the Marine Hall dioramas? Other are labelled from "So. Calif."

The Eckhart Coral Collection (LACMNH Accession F.A.3738.99-1) appears to have been carefully wrapped in heat sealed plastic. Some of this may have been purchased material as some has price labels associated with specimens.

There are also the occasional sponges and bryozoans in this collection - origins no obvious.

Label Condition (Top)

Date 4: New labels needed immediately (original labels in poor condition, paper torn/worn, legibility poor). 3: New labels needed within next 1-2 years (original labels beginning to wear, pencil writing fading, low quality paper was used). 2: New labels needed are as a result of curation and accretion of collection. 1: No new labels needed at present.

Most specimens do not have label data.

Label Content (Top)

Date 2: New label or additional label needed because original label data is incomplete and supporting documentation provides additional collection data which greately enhances significance and value of each lot. 1: Label content complete. All collection data are contained on label.

Most of this material does not have data, or the data is unreliable as most specimens do not have labels directly associated with them.
