Greyscale images are very poor
If you have greyscale images, try saving using PDF instead of TIFF format:
- Select tab Options (4)
- File Format: PDF
Also try other options for text vs. photo settings:
- Select tab Basic Settings (2)
- Original Type: Text, Text and Photo, etc.
Light or faded originals
Faded or light originals (for example, a light photocopy original) may end up unreadably light using the default settings. To fix that, try adjusting the Lighten/Darken setting:
- Select tab Advanced Settings (3)
- Image Quality: Lighten/Darken
- Try moving the setting toward the Darker end of the scale
- Image Quality: Lighten/Darken
Dark originals
Very dark originals (for example, a reprint cover printed on dark blue paper) may be unreadably dark or blotchy with the default settings. To fix that, adjust two settings: select the lightest Lighten/Darken setting and then try a range of Contrast settings:
- Select tab Advanced Settings (3)
- Image Quality: Lighten/Darken
- Put the setting all the way to the Lighter end of the scale
- More Image Quality: Contrast
- Try a range of contrast settings from High to Low to find one that works well
- Image Quality: Lighten/Darken
Weirdly inconsistent scans
Some originals (for example, some 19th century letterpress reprints) give inconsistent scans. Some pages have excellent contrast, but some pages (seemingly identical in the original) are are very faint or dark and blotchy.
This seems to be caused by an overly-aggressive Background Suppression. To fix that:
- Select tab Advanced Settings (3)
- Image Quality: Background Suppression
- Set to Off
- Image Quality: Background Suppression
