Definitions
Furcilia
- Fourth larval stage in euphausiaceans, marked by movable compound eyes that project beyond edge of carapace. [Moore and McCormick, 1969]
- Larval stage of euphausiids that has stalked eyes and resembles the adult in general body form. [Mauchline, 1984]
- Second larval stage following the nauplius stage in euphausids, corresponding roughly to the zoea stage. [Brusca and Brusca, 2002]
- (Taxon-specific: Order Euphausiacea) Fourth of several larval stages (nauplius, metanauplius, calyptopis, furcilia). Characterized by emergence of movable eyes from under carapace and progressive development of thoracic and abdominal somites. Last substage, formerly termed cyrtopia, involves final differentiation of second antennae, mandibles (palps), first thoracopods, and telson and development of pleopods for swimming.
