Subject: RE: Bell, 1862, date
Dear Rod,
Prof. Bell wrote the Preface to Part 2 of his monograph (pp. v-vii) in March 1862 and the title-page is also dated 1862. However, there was some delay in getting the part through the press before the end of that year. The library copy in the Natural History Museum has “1858-1913” at the foot of the title page, 1913 referring to the date on which the publication of a Title-page, Contents and Index formally completed the monograph (which been without an index for 50 years). Facing this 1913 Title-page is a table giving the “order of binding and dates of publication”, and this indicates clearly that Part 2 was actually published in May 1863.
I do not know how you came to approach me about this, as I know almost nothing of Cretaceous or Crustacea. But you did curiously well, because it happens that I was the editor of Wright & Collins’s monograph and have in addition traced the same discrepancy in another Pal Soc Monograph – perhaps a part of one of Owen’s works. I can’t remember whether that referred to the same year
If you need more information, especially documentation of what I am saying here, you could ask the Pal Soc Secretary, who may be able to tell you who to approach about the archives.Yours sincerely, Adrian Rushton
