Usage Tips
Some hints on searching the glossary
- If you know exactly the term you want to find, type it into the box marked Search: and click on the button. That will return only the definition for that specific term. It must match exactly. Hence you may wish to try the or Browse list of all terms if you fail to get a match.
- If you have a general idea of the term for which you're searching, type one or more words into the box marked Search: and click on the button. That will search the terms, definitions, plurals, cross-references, and synonyms for any word beginning with the word(s) you typed. The results will be returned sorted alphabetically by term.
- To see a list of all the terms that are defined, select Browse list of all terms just below the search line. You can then select any term to see its definition. This list includes only the main entry terms, not synonyms. You may be able to find synonyms using the method.
Formatting options
- Check the Highlight general search matches box if you would like to see your search terms highlighted in the results from a . This can be helpful if the results are extensive.
- Check the Format images for printing box if you would like
to have high-resolution versions of the images used when you print
from the web page. Choosing this option will cause large versions
of the images to be downloaded, causing slower page-loading and
printing (but with much higher-quality printed images).
The on-screen display will not change, but printed images will be
different. Some older web browsers may print two copies of each image
with this option. If that is the case, just don't use it.
Note: this option must be checked before you select Display complete list, or it will have no effect. - Check the No images box to suppress the display of images. When images are suppressed, a small icon (like the one at right) will appear by any definition that would show an image if images were not suppressed. Remove the check from the No images box to see the images.
