Proboscis

• (Taxon-specific: Subclass Branchiura) On underside of cephalothorax, unpaired median projection posterior to preoral sting. Retractile, enclosing mouth and surrounding labrum, mandibles, and paragnaths. Supported distally by series of chitinous bars. Used to feed on host tissues; lies in groove when at rest. [Stachowitsch, 1992]
