Invertebrate Paleontology

Significance

The specimens were collected from exposures of the Foxen Formation in the vicinity of Santa Maria, California, and many of the sites are no longer accessible.

Background

The specimens were collected by Robert J. Stanton Jr. during his paleontological research over the last several decades.

Collection Location and Dates

Pliocene, Foxen Formation, Santa Maria, California.

Taxonomic Contents

The collection is primarily composed of mollusks and many of the specimen lots are identified to species level.

Documentation

Locality information is cataloged and associated with specimens. Accession number F.A.3971.2004-1.

Description of Collection

The specimens are stored in metal drawers and cabinets at the Museum's Invertebrate Paleontology Facility, South Grand Avenue. The material presently is arranged by taxonomic group. It needs to be re-sorted by collecting locality in order to be integrated into the LACMIP main collections.

Collection Inventory

The Foxen Formation portion of the collections contains approximately 65 cataloged lots of specimens from 13 cataloged LACMIP collecting localities.

Labels need to be generated, printed, cut, and placed in the tray of each specimen lot. However, the number of specimens in each lot was automatically entered into the database as 1 when the lot information was downloaded, therefore the true number of specimens needs to be determined by actually counting them and then the database and labels need to be updated.
