Significance
The Southern California Bight 2008 Regional Monitoring Program (Bight’08) is part of an effort to provide an integrated assessment of environmental condition through cooperative regional-scale monitoring. The Bight’08 program is a continuation of regional surveys conducted in 1994, 1998 and 2003, and represents the joint efforts of more than 90 participating organizations. The Bight’08 program consists of several elements including: Sediment Toxicity, Sediment Chemistry, Areas of Special Biological Significance (ASBS), Demersal Fishes and Megabenthic Invertebrates, Benthic Macrofauna, Offshore Water Quality, Rocky Reefs, Shoreline Microbiology, and Bioaccumulation.
Background
The California Ocean Plan designates 14 different Areas of Special Biological Significance (ASBS) in southern California, covering roughly 280 kilometers of coastline, as water quality protected areas. The Ocean Plan stipulates that ASBS shall receive "no discharge of waste" and "maintain natural water quality". More information was needed to determine the range of natural conditions and whether ASBS are adequately protected, especially during wet weather when runoff discharges are common.
