Leopecten diegensis (Dall, 1898)

San Diego scallop

Description: Shell shape is inequivalve, with right valve more convex than left, which is flattened. Sculpture comprises rounded radial ribs and wide interspaces on left valve, and broad, flat-topped radial ribs with fine commarginal lamellae in interspaces on right valve. Color is variable, and may include yellow, orange, red, or brown.

Size: 80-100 mm.

Ecology: Epifaunal and unattached on soft muddy or sandy sediment from the nearshore zone to upper bathyal (10-400 m of water depth).

Geological range: Late Pliocene-Recent (4-0 million years ago).

Geographic distribution: Northern California (39°N) to Baja California Sur, México (22°N). Reported from the Pico Formation (Pliocene-Pleistocene), Santa Barbara Formation (Pleistocene, California), Lomita Marl (Pleistocene, California) and Quaternary terrace deposits of California and Baja California, México.
