Significance

This is a deepwater San Diego Trough and Santa Catalina Basin collection and comes to NHMLAC via Pete Jumars.

Background

Selected publications resulting from this collection include:

Jumars, P.A. 1978. Spatial autocorrelation with RUM (Remote Underwater Manipulator): vertical and horizontal structure of a bathyal benthic community. Deep-Sea Research 25: 589-604.

Jumars, P.A. 1975. Environmental grain and polychaete species’ diversity in a bathyal benthic community. Marine Biology 30: 253-266.

Collection Location and Dates

Sampling in the San Diego Trough was carried out during October and November of 1973 as part of the Expedition QUAGMIRE. RUM (Remote Underwater Manipulator) was used to collect core samples.

Taxonomic Contents

Collecting emphasis was mostly on meiofauna.

Documentation

Jumar’s thesis as well as station and specimen information resides in the Polychaete Collection Manager’s office. Some of the samples from his thesis work went to the Scripps Research Institute.

Description of Collection

The bulk of the collection contains unsorted meiofauna, 20% of the collection is composed of glass vials in jars and identified to some taxonomic level (phylum, class, family or species). Collection is stored in ethanol in the LACM Polychaete Collection Range (basement).

Collection Inventory

There are 112 jars containing glass vials organized by station. Each jar contains anywhere from 3 - 70 vials and the contents are sorted to some taxonomic level (phylum, class, family, or species). The remaing 484 jars are unsorted meiofauna (material not separted from sediment), presumably fixed in formalin, now stored in ethanol.
